The fortified tosca-stone church of Sant Bertomeu within Xàbia's inland old town below the Montgó

Alicante · Marina Alta

Xàbia

An inland old town, a working port and the Arenal share one broad bay below the Montgó, connected by the golden tosca stone quarried from Xàbia's shore.

Tosca stone and three centres

A town that reaches from the Montgó to the bay

Xàbia is best understood as three connected centres rather than one waterfront resort. The fortified church of Sant Bertomeu anchors the historic town inland, Duanes de la Mar grew around the port and the Arenal faces the shallow central bay.

The Montgó and Cap de Sant Antoni close that bay to the north. Golden tosca stone from the old coastal quarries gives the historic buildings a material connection to the same landscape.
